WWII Named WASP Women’s Air Force Service Pilot Uniform Jacket and Wings Group

The group includes the modified Ike jacket and the sterling, pin back WASP wings of Katherine Kupferberg (who later married and became Katherine Kupferberg Kornblum), a member of the Women’s Air Force Service Pilots (“WASP”) who flew as a pilot for the Army Air Force Ferrying Command during World War II. The Ike jacket  is a man’s size 36 regular that was modified for wear by Ms. Kupferberg through the removal of the front pockets; the removal of three of the four front buttons and their replacement with a Talon zipper; and the placement of darts in the front of the jacket to shape it to her figure. The right side of the jacket carries a large, 3-3/4 inch jacket patch of the Army Air Force Ferrying Command. On the collar is a small pin back lapel badge of the Ferrying Command. On the left breast is a leather name patch that is embossed with the WASP wings and the name “K.R. Kupferberg”.  Above the name patch is a small pin back winged propeller insignia. The jacket has a few spots and wear to the edges of the cuffs, but overall it is in very good condition. The group further includes Ms. Kupferberg’s WASP wings, which are 2-5/8 inches wide, pin back, and marked “Sterling”. The group further includes a framed 8 by 10 inch portrait photograph of Ms. Kupferberg in her WASP uniform, the photo bearing the signature “Katherine R. Kornblum”. There is also a World War II pillow case cover for the 4th Ferrying Group of the Ferrying Division of the Air Transport Command. Finally, the group includes copies of information of the WASPs and obituaries of Ms. Kornblum.
