WWII Japanese Army Officer Shin Gunto Type 98 Sword Signed Kanetada

The standard issue Japanese Army officer’s sword has an overall length in the scabbard of approximately 41-1/4 inches, with a blade length of approximately 26-7/8 inches. The sword blade is in excellent condition with no flaws or blemishes and with visible and distinct slightly wavy temper line.  The tang shows some relatively minimal surface rust and it has a single mounting hole. The tang bears the signature of “Kanetada “. The ray skin grip is wrapped in the traditional style with brown fabric, with the wrap showing very little wear. Beneath the wrapping are the standard military menuki of three cherry blossoms. The tsuba guard is the solid gilt style, with relief cherry blossoms and is numbered with numbers matching the spacers. The aluminum brown scabbard paint exhibits minor age and wear. Interestingly, the upper ring mount is mounted on the opposite side of the scabbard from what is generally seen.
