WWI US Model 1917 Shin Guard Leg Armor Set

$950.00

According to “Helmets and Body Armor in Modern Warfare” by Bashford Dean (1977 Edition), the lower leg armor was created due to the high number of wounds that were being sustained by infantrymen going “over the top” on the western front. The shin guards were fashioned from helmet steel and secured to the lower legs with leather straps that were fastened around the upper calf and ankle. The steel plates were lined with a band of split leather secured with rivets. According to Dean, 35,000 of the guards were sent to France. These guards show expected signs of age, with the leather lining strips being dry exhibiting the powdered surfaces that result in the aging of leather that was vegetable tanned. All attachment rivets are intact. The exterior surfaces retain a coat of horizon blue paint. The leather calf and ankle attachment straps are complete and intact. Overall very good condition.
