Group belonging to 1st Lieut Claude E. Vollmayer which consists of;
Corded wool tunic with nice bullion pilots wing, matching “USR” and Air Service collar insignia and silver 1st Lieut bars. Left sleeve with one overseas service stripe and honorable discharge stripe. There is a ghost of a shoulder patch and in the pocket is a 3rd Army patch. Tunic is very good with minor mothing on the back left shoulder and wear to the interior collar. Named in the sleeve “Claude Vollmayer”.
Officer’s quality trousers in excellent condition.
Officer’s wool overcoat with single row of black cuff braid and matching horn buttons. There are some areas of light mothing and a few small moth holes – but nothing that really detracts.
Officers visor hat with partially detached leather sweatband and stains to the edge of the crown. No holes or damage.
Overseas hat with green/back piping and 1st Lieut rank insignia, excellent condition.
Aero Club of America Aviator’s ID book, dated 12 Dec 1917 with photo and signature.
Named Pilots Log Book, with entries starting 11/14/17, ending 11/2/18. Type of flights listed as “Testing”, “Combat”, “Shooting at Balloon” etc.
Leather bound diary named in the front cover “Claude E. Vollmoyer / 1st Lt. A.S.S.C. U.S.R.”, begins in the back on Oct 30 1917 ( using the same page for 2 years entries )and continues until Dec 6th 1918. Diary starts with training in the US, embarks from NY on 1/10/18, arrives at Liverpool 1/23/18, France 2/3/18 for flight training, spends most of his time testing new airplanes at Issoudun, trains with the Italians for a few months and returns to France to test more planes. All pages contain entries in clear script.
