A 1 liter stoneware stein, showing a color transfer and hand-painted details, and bearing the designation of “Valenciennes Weihnachten Anno 1915” (“Christmas in Valenciennes [France] in 1915”). Valenciennes is a town in the Nord department in northern France. During World War I the German army occupied the town in 1914. They were finally driven out by British forces at the Battle of Valenciennes in 1918, in which seven British divisions attacked eleven German divisions. The stein base is marked “Martin Pauson, München”. The stein is in mint condition.
