WWI Identified 8th Balloon Company Khaki Tunic and Gas Mask Set
The tunic is a khaki cotton summer weight jacket with “US” and Air Service disks on the collar. The lower left sleeve has a single overseas chevron while the upper left sleeve has an embroidered wool 5th Corps patch above an embroidered balloon company patch. The interior of the jacket has a handwritten number, presumably the owner’s service number. The tunic has some expected spots and signs of wear but overall it is in very good condition. The tunic is accompanied by the owners gas mask within its original carrying bag. The rear of the bag is annotated with the name and unit of the owner: “Lane 8th Bal.” The gas mask hose and mask are, as typical, stiff with age, but the mask, hose and canister are complete and intact.
