WWI Experimental Belgian Model 1917 Combat Helmet with Integral Visor

$4,950.00

The experimental helmet was manufactured in England in response to the desire of the Belgian government to secure for its troops a combat helmet which protected the soldier’s face as well as his head. The helmet was then tested for use by the United States Army during the war (see: Helmets and Body Armor in Modern Warfare by Bashford Dean, copyright 1977, published by Carl J. Pugliese; pages 156-160, which includes photographs of an American Ordnance officer wearing the helmet). The exterior olive brown finish is largely intact and dark with age, with the finish being noticeably lighter on the front where it was protected by the visor having been in a raised position. The full liner and the leather chinstrap remain present and complete. The chinstrap shows flaking to the surface but it is quite sound. Overall very good condition.
