Victorian Period British Pattern 1856 Royal Navy Midshipman Dirk Engraved to “A.E.A. Freemantle, R.N.”

$675.00

The dirk has an overall length in the scabbard of approximately 23-1/2 inches. The engraved blade, which has a satin matte finish, is generally quite clean, showing a few typical darker spots scattered on the length of each side. The blade is etched on both sides for most of its length, with the decorations including a fouled anchor with crown and the royal cypher of Queen Victoria. The ricasso is marked with the name of a Portsmouth distributor. The grip is covered in a faux rayskin which is tightly wrapped in brass wire and, while the grip covering exhibits age, it is intact. The brass lion head pommel, back strap, and guard all show an uncleaned patina. The reverse of the guard is engraved “A.E.A. Freemantle, R.N.”. This was the son of Admiral Sir Edmund Robert Freemantle of the Royal Navy. The brass fittings on the scabbard also show an uncleaned patina. The leather scabbard itself shows scuffs and scratches, but it is complete and intact. Overall very good condition.
