U.S. Army Model 1840 Medical Staff Officer Sword

The sword has an overall length in the scabbard of approximately 36-1/2 inches. The blade is etched on both sides, with the etch showing wear. One side bears the designation of “U.S. Medical Staff”, flanked by decorative designs. The opposite side is etched with decorative designs which include a panoply of arms. Along with the wear to the etched portions, the blade shows spots and speckling of the surface and pitting on both sides for approximately the lower 4-1/2 inches of the blade. The guard and the obverse and reverse langets both show wear to the gilt plating, while the grip itself retains much of the plating. The decorated scabbard exhibits uncleaned patina for its entire length on both sides.
