The Mess Dress Uniform of U.S. Army Lieutenant General and Chief of Engineers Elvin R. Heiberg III

The uniform is comprised of the high quality white dress jacket and the black formal trousers. The cuffs have the bullion rank stars of a Lieutenant General as well as gold bullion Corps of Engineers insignia. The jacket also bears the smaller General Staff badge as worn on the formal uniform. The uniform is in excellent condition. Elvin Heiberg graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1953. He retired in 1988 as a U.S. Army Lieutenant General. He was Chief of Engineers between 1984 and 1988. His multiple decorations included the Silver Star for valor in Vietnam: “The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Corps of Engineers) Elvin Ragnvald Heiberg, III, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Colonel Heiberg distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Commanding Officer of the 4th Engineer Combat Battalion, 4th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in 1968 and 1969. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Lieutenant Colonel Heiberg, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army”.
