Japanese Navy Officer Kai Gunto Sword

The sword has an overall length in the scabbard of approximately 37 inches with a blade length of approximately 23 1/2 inches. The blade is bright and it is without chips or active rust. It has several very small nicks to the cutting edge. The tang has one hole. The tang is unsigned and bears the anchor mark of the Imperial Japanese Navy. The tsuba is plain, blackened brass. The grip is covered in black fabric to replicate shark skin and it is wrapped in the traditional fashion in golden brown silk tape. The standard gilt military menuki of three cherry blossoms is beneath the wrapping on both sides. The wood scabbard is black lacquer and carries gilt fittings. There are some minor scrapes to the painted scabbard. The sword is in overall very good condition and makes a fine presentation.
