Silver Mounted 18th Century Officer’s Short Sword
$2,850.00
A silver mounted short sword, or cuttoe (also called a “hunting sword”), American or European origin, 18th century, of a type often carried by officers of the Continental Army in the American Revolution (For similar examples see: “Swords and Blades of the American Revolution, by George Neumann, Scurlock Publishing Company, 1995; and “The American Sword 1775-1945” by Harold L. Peterson, Dover Publications, 2003).
The sword is overall 27 1/2 inches in length, with the blade approximately 22 inches long. A fuller runs down the blade on each side, beginning about 3 1/2 inches below the silver guard. One one side of the blade in the fuller is an engraving of a dog chasing a deer; on the other side the dog chases a boar. On each side of the ricasso, between the fuller and the top of the blade, is engraved a panoply of arms. The top flat side of the blade in engraved with arrow that points towards the tip of the blade. There is graying to the blade and some oxidation on the ricasso, but the blade is in overall very fine condition.
The grip is carved ivory, dyed green, with a lion head pommel. A brass cap extends out of the head of the lion. The carving depicts exceptional detail, including a separate tongue for the lion that is dyed red. Expected wear to the dye on the grip after 200 years, but no cracks or chips. The cloth washer remains in place at the top of the blade.
