Signed WWII Skull and Crossbones Flag Fragment
$195.00
The fragment is a portion of a larger piece and it is approximately 11 inches by 12 inches. The piece bears multiple handwritten names and home towns, presumably of the men in one unit. One of the names written on the scarf is “Lt. Elmer L. Chalberg” of Humboldt, South Dakota. Research has found a website picturing the grave of Elmer Humboldt in South Dakota, with the headstone identifying him as having served as a Captain in the United States Army in World War II and having been decorated with the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. Additional information from the same site relates that Humboldt was married in June of 1943 at Camp Maxey, Texas. This camp was the training location for both the 99th Infantry Division and the 102nd Infantry Division, as well as other units. The scarf shows age, with raw edges where it was cut from a larger piece, but overall good condition.
