Signed WWII Japanese Army Officer Shin Gunto Sword with Company Officer Tassel
$1,450.00
The sword has an overall length in the scabbard of approximately 39 inches, with a blade length of approximately 27 inches. The sword blade is generally bright, showing some pinprick oxidation as well as scattered cloudiness, but displaying a visible and distinct temper line. The tang shows a few small spots of surface rust and it has two mounting holes, as well as a signature. The tang is signed “Noshu-ju Taniguchi Yoshikane”, whose legal name was Taniguchi Kazue and he entered the Seki Guild Log on August 31 of Showa 15 (1940). At the 6th Shinsaku NihontÅ Denrankai in 1941 he was accorded the honor of the title “Shinshin”, or””Fifth Seat”, meaning that he was recognized as an “up and coming” sword smith in the nation. The ray skin grip is wrapped in the traditional style with golden brown fabric, with the wrap showing some minor soiling from handling. Beneath the wrapping are the standard gilt military menuki of three cherry blossoms. The tsuba guard is the solid style, with relief cherry blossoms. The dark brown scabbard paint shows age, with scratches and scuffs, but it is essentially intact. Tied to the scabbard ring is the brown and blue tassel of a Company Grade officer, with the tassel showing age and a bit of edge fraying, but being complete and intact.
