Signed Tensho Period 1582 Dated Japanese Tanto with Kogatana Knife

The tanto has an overall length in the scabbard of approximately 21 inches, with a blade length of approximately 13 inches. The blade is generally bright, showing some some spots and with minor inclusions, but overall the blade is in very good condition with a visible temper line. The tang is dated 1582, and it is signed “Bishu Osafume Sukesada’. The gilt habaki collar shows patina with an etched “falling rain” design. The pierced tsuba displays relief decoration. The ray skin grip is wrapped in the traditional fashion with black fabric. Beneath the fabric on each side are menuki which appear to be dragons. The pommel and the ferrule are also decorated in gilt designs. The Kogatana knife, secured within a slot on the scabbard, hass relief decorations on one side of the grip. Overall very good condition.
