Portrait and Illustrated Spanish American War Letters by Lt. Col. O.J. Hopkins, Ohio National Guard

The group is comprised of a pencil portrait of a soldier and illustrated letters from Lieutenant Colonel O.J. Hopkins, of the 1st Light Artillery Regiment of the Ohio National Guard. This was almost certainly Owen Johnston Hopkins, who fought with an Ohio Regiment of the Union Army in the Civil War. The group is comprised of the following:
– A pencil portrait of a soldier, signed with a capital letter “H” and dated 1900, titled “Just From the Firing Line”. Approximately 5-3/8 inches by 8-3/8 inches. The paper shows age soiling.
– A letter on Hopkins’ stationary as an officer of the Ohio National Guard, dated December 23, 1897, and addressed “My Dear Herringshaw”, 3 single sided pages, typed, with illustrations incorporated into the text.
– A letter dated April 5, 1898, and addressed “My Dear Herringshaw”, 1 single sided page, typed, with a comic illustration of a mounted cavalryman fleeing a shell incorporated into the text. Signed “In Haste Yours…O.J.H.”
– A letter dated July 27, 1898, and addressed “My Dear Herringshaw”, 4 pages, typed on both sides of two sheets of paper, with illustrations incorporated into the text. Signed “O.J. Hopkins”.
All of the documents show age toning but they are in overall excellent condition, with age toning.
