Panther Head SS Officer’s Sword

The sword has an overall length of approximately 38-1/2 inches, with a blade length of approximately 32 inches. The blade has the matte satin finish seen on the blades of the SS officer degens. The blade shows a few minor spots but it is generally very clean. A black leather washer is in place at the top of the ricasso. The hilt is silvered aluminum, with the silvering being intact. The black celluloid grip is without chips or cracks and tightly triple wrapped in silver wire. The hilt fittings all exhibit excellent detail. The obverse of the guard has an open wing eagle, while the reverse langet escutcheon bears a finely engraved set of SS runes. The strap of the knuckle guard has an impressive array of oak leaves in relief. The pommel is a fine panther head with faceted red glass eyes. There is a scrape to the brow of the panther on one side of the head. The sword exhibits hand finishing in the manner in which the pommel screw was engraved to better blend in with the fur of the panther head. The scabbard shows only minor wear and age to the gloss black paint. Overall the sword is in very good condition and it makes a very impressive appearance.
