Near Mint Signed WWII Japanese Army Officer Type 98 Shin Gunto Sword
$1,975.00
The sword measures 40 inches overall with a 25-3/8 inch bright blade with a distinct straight temper line. The blade shows some minor scratches and signs of cleaning at the tip but remains in excellent condition. The tang has a single mounting hole and is signed “Nishimura Kanetsune” who’s legal name was Nishimura Hihumi, he entered the Seki Guild May 3, 1941. The grip is covered in white sharkskin and is tightly wrapped in the traditional manner in brown fabric which shows no wear. Beneath the fabric on each side of the grip are the standard military menuki of three cherry blossoms with bright gilt finish, solid tsuba retaining most of its gilt finish. The handle fittings retain most of their original finish with no wear, knotted through the top loop is a blue and brown sword knot showing minor wear. The steel scabbard is covered with a tightly sewn leather cover with two closure snaps at the throat. The leather shows a few minor scuffs but remains in near mint condition. Overall the sword remains in near mint / excellent condition and is certainly one of the cleanest Japanese swords that I have owned.
