Named WWII Japanese Army Lieutenant General’s Dress Uniform Tunic and Cap Set

$4,800.00

The group is comprised of the tailored dress tunic of a highly decorated Lieutenant General of the Imperial Japanese Army; his named dress cap; the leather carrying case for the cap; the cardboard tube for the storage and protection of the feathered plume for the cap; and the cased gold shoulder knots. The tunic is constructed of the highest quality black wool, formed and fitted by a Tokyo tailor whose label is inside of the tunic collar. The tunic is heavily ornamented with toned gold braid on the sleeves and similarly toned gold bullion covering the collar. On the upper front of the tunic there is a line of loops for the wear of a long medal bar. On the front center of the tunic there is a set of four loops i the form of a cross for the wear of a breast star decoration. The tunic exhibits some spots of wear to the top and front edges of the collar, but otherwise the tunic is very clean, and without holes, damage or repairs. Also with the group are the gold shoulder knots of a Lieutenant General for the dress tunic, contained within their fitted case. The matching dress cap is also present with the uniform, in a leather carrying case. The wool cap is very clean, and complete with the dress plume, which is contained within its protective cardboard tube. The surface of the front cap visor shows typical age crazing and some chips to the surface material of the visor. The interior lining of the cap is embroidered with the name of the owner: “Tanabe”. There were two Japanese Army Lieutenant Generals with the name of “Tanabe”. One of these was “Tanabe Matsutarō”, who died in 1977; and “Tanabe Moritake”, who was executed by the Dutch in 1949 for unspecified war crimes, although it was known that in 1941, as Vice Chief of the Imperial Japanese Army General Staff, he had strenuously opposed the attack on Pearl Harbor. A comparison of the biographies of the two Generals strongly suggests that the uniform and cap were those of Tanabe Moritake, since his biography states that he was the recipient of the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun. This award would have includes a breast star such as this tunic is set up to wear. Overall the group is in exceptional condition and it makes a truly impressive appearance.
