The medals were awarded to Captain Donald F. Gourley of the 756th Tank Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division, with the Silver Star having been conferred for gallantry in action against the enemy at Solacciano, Italy, on 13 May 1944. The group is comprised of the following medals:

  • Silver Star decoration, slot brooch suspension, officially hand engraved “Donald F. Gourley”;
  • Bronze Star decoration with “V” for valor, slot brooch suspension, unnamed as awarded in the theater of operations;
  • Purple Heart decoration, slot brooch suspension, unnamed as awarded in the theater of operations, with some minor wear to the gilt finish on the reverse;
  • European Campaign Medal, crimp brooch suspension, with the medal itself having a lacquered gloss finish;

  • The group also includes individual ribbons for the Silver Star, the Bronze Star with “V”, the European Campaign Medal (lacking a pin), and the WWII Victory Medal (lacking pin).
