Named GAR Killed In Action Memorial Accolade

A large Grand Army of the Republic poster, 8 3/4 by 21 inches in size, for the memorialization of a soldier who served in the Union Army in the Civil War. The poster was printed with openings at the top and the bottom. A piece of paper with a unit designation could be placed on the back of the poster at the top, and a piece of paper with a name on it could be placed on the back of the poster at the bottom, creating a personalized memorial or accolade. This example was created to memorialize John Stickevers of the 173rd New York Volunteer Infantry. According to the roster of that unit (available on line), Stickevers enlisted in Brooklyn in September of 1862 at the age of 47, to serve for a period of 3 years. He was killed in action on June 14, 1863, at Port Hudson, Louisiana. There is a hole in the insert which bears the unit designation, although the unit designation remains very clear. The poster shows some edge chipping and signs of age but the colors remain bright and the poster as a whole is impressive.
