Named Cased U.S. Navy Posthumous Purple Heart for the Pearl Harbor Attack

$4,200.00

The sterling, silver gilt Purple Heart has a split brooch suspension. It is officially hand engraved to “Pete Turk S2C USN”. The profile of George Washington is toned with age, and there is some light wear to the gilt finish on one edge. The decoration is contained within the purple case together with the ribbon bar and enamel lapel badge. The finish of the case shows some wear, as does the interior pad. Seaman Turk was serving on the battleship USS California and was killed in action during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. The medal is accompanied by research documentation and casualty filed which shows that Turk, from Kansas, enlisted in the Navy in 1940 at the age of 19. He was initially reported as missing after the acted and in January of 1942 he was declared to have been killed in action. His remains were not recovered.

From Wikipedia: California was moored in Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941 when the Japanese attacked the port, bringing the United States into World War II. The ship was moderately damaged by a pair of torpedoes and a bomb, but a fire disabled the ship’s electrical system, preventing the pumps from being used to keep the ship afloat. California slowly filled with water over the following three days and eventually sank. Her crew suffered heavy casualties in the attack and four men were awarded the Medal of Honor for their actions during the attack. She was raised in April 1942, repaired and heavily rebuilt, and returned to service in January 1944.
