Named British Royal Navy Officer Visor Cap
$125.00
The heavy dark blue black wool body of the cap shows surface dust and some soiling, but the body of the cap is without holes or damage. The mohair cap band exhibits a few small pulls to the material, while the weighty metal and bullion cap badge displays a fine dark patina. The edge trim of the visor has one or two small chips. The leather chin strap is in place across the visor. The interior of the cap shows that the cap was well worn, with loss of stitching to the front circumference of the leather sweatband and with a separation of the sweatband in the rear. The interior crown of the cap shows soiling. The interior rear of the cap bears the label of the London military clothier of Gieves, Ltd., which was founded in 1785 and was known primarily as a supplier of uniforms for the Royal Navy (In 1974, Gieves acquired the old military clothier “Hawkes”, a tailor of Royal Army uniforms, to become “Gieves and Hawkes”). The name of the Royal Navy officer who owned the cap is written on the tailor’s label. While the cap shows wear and age, it exhibits great character and it presents a fine appearance.
