The decoration is contained within its titled black leather case together with the ribbon bar and the enamel lapel badge. Also with the medal is the unit history of the 376th Infantry Regiment of the 94th Infantry Division. The unit history is hardcover, printed in Germany in December of 1945. Approximately 8-1/2 inches by 12 inches. 202 pages with an appendix which lists recipients of awards and decorations, including Nicholas in the roster of Silver Star recipients. Additionally, pages 38 and 39 of the book contain a brief account of Nicholas’ bravery as a forward observer, this presumably being the event for which he was awarded the Silver Star. The volume shows wear and age but it is complete and intact.
