Named 1917 Bavarian Army General Uniform of Prince Alfons of Bavaria

The uniform is comprised of the tailor made field gray tunic and breeches for a Generalleutnant of the Imperial Bavarian Army, the breeches with the tailor label dated in 1917 and named to “Prinz Alfons”. In 1892. Prince Alfons became commander of the Bavarian Schweren-Reiter-Regiment. In 1905 he reached the rank General of Cavalry, finishing his career as the commander of 7 K.B. Chevaulegers-Regiment. The tunic is piped in red on the collar, the cuffs, and on the rear skirt. All buttons are present, being the Bavarian crowned lion style. The upper left breast has four loops for a long ribbon or medal bar, while the lower left breast has two sets of loops for awards. The collar exhibits the heavily embroidered collar tabs of a Bavarian Army General, with those tabs showing darkly toned bullion. The shoulders carry slip on shoulder boards of a Generalleutnant, or Lieutenant General. The tunic has several small holes and signs of actual wear, but overall it is in very good condition and it makes an excellent appearance. The breeches show more wear than the tunic, with tracking, several holes, and multiple period repairs. The breeches retain the wide red stripes of a General officer, and the bottoms of the legs still have the foot straps to keep the breeches in the wearer’s boots. The rear of the breeches have the label of the Bavarian tailoring firm of Christian Schwarz & Sohn. There is also a tailor label inside of the breeches rear size adjustment strap, with this label bearing the handwritten date of February 24, 1917, and identifying the uniform as that of Prince Alfons, with the handwritten notation on the label being “Sr(Seiner) kgl (königlichen) Hoheit Prinz Alfons”, meaning “His Royal Highness Prince Alfons”. Overall the uniform is exceptionally impressive and, while any uniform of a First World War Bavarian General would be very scarce, such a uniform named to a member of the Bavarian Royal family is extraordinary.
