Large Named Spanish American War Medals, Insignia, Photographs, and Visor Cap Group

The group is comprised of the medals, insignia, photographs, and visor cap of Sullivan W. Emerson, who served during the Spanish American War as an officer of the First Vermont Infantry Regiment. The group includes the following items:

-Spanish American War First Vermont Infantry Regiment, United States Volunteers, Veteran Medal, in gilt and enamel. The reverse bears the raised dedication of “The Gift of W.S. Webb” and it is engraved “Co. G”. Approximately 1,030 medals were issued, having been made from metal taken from Admiral Cervera’s flagship, the “Maria Teresa”. Maker marked by Davison of Philadelphia. Excellent condition, with the enamel being free of chips or cracks.

-Vermont National Guard Veteran Medal, with three “Five Years” bars.

-Gilt “Expert Rifleman” badge, reverse being maker marked by The Hines Brothers Company.

-A serial numbered aluminum identification disk from “The American Army Registry”.

-Two examples of the 1891 Medal for the Dedication of the Battle of Bennington Monument in Bennington, Vermont, and celebrating the centennial of the admission of Vermont as a State. One medal is quite clean, while the other medal shows dirt and verdigris.

-1897 souvenir medal for the dedication of the monument to Ulysses S. Grant in Riverside Park, New York.

-A pair of gilt officer collar insignia for the First Vermont Infantry Regiment, showing verdigris.

-A pair of gilt eagle officer collar insignia, showing toning of the finish.

-A single crossed rifles infantry insignia; a Spanish American War Veteran lapel badge; and a small, pin back, American eagle insignia.

-Two watch fobs on leather hangers for the Vermont 1st Regiment Maneuvers of 1906 in Mt. Gretna, Pennsylvania.

-A watch fob on leather hanger for the 1904 Maneuver of “Camp No. 2” at Thoroughfare Gap, Virginia.

-A watch fob, without leather hanger, for the 1908 war maneuvers at Pine Plains, New York.

-Two sets of gilt “USV” collar letters.

-A pair of Model 1872 officer shoulder knots of the post 1885 design when white was adopted as the branch of service color for infantry. The knots have eagle “I” buttons and are maker marked on the reverse.  The knots show age toning and the white wool exhibits soiling.

-Vermont National Guard Officer visor cap. The interior sweatband bears the inked name of “Lieut. S.W. Emerson” and the designation of “Co. G”. The visor shows age crazing and the embroidered gilt insignia is toned with age. The cap has Vermont state side buttons on the gold cap cord. The wool body exhibits dust and some small scattered holes. The interior shows wear and use.

-18 photographs, which range is overall size from approximately 3-7/8 inches by 4-7/8 inches up to 7-3/4 inches by 9-3/4 inches. These include a full length portrait photograph of Emerson in uniform, wearing the visor cap that is a part of this group. He also wears on his uniform the Spanish American War First Vermont Infantry Regiment, United States Volunteers, Veteran Medal, as well as the Vermont National Guard Veteran Medal, with one “Five Years” bar. One photograph depicts Emerson in the uniform of the “Patriarch Militant”, the uniformed branch of the Odd Fellows fraternal society. One large photograph shows men of Company G of the 1st Regiment wearing fatigue uniforms in a tent camp, with two of the soldiers wearing Red Cross armbands. There are also two copies of a large photograph which shows Lieutenant Emerson and two other officers of the regiment sitting in camp chairs and holding their swords.

Overall the items in the group are in very good condition.
