The leather body of the helmet is lightened from age and dust. The helmet body exhibits typical small scrapes and indentations from age. The helmet spine, spike, front visor trim, “fish scale” chin strap, and spike, are all brass from which the gilt finish is largely gone, although traces can be seen on the front plate. Both the national colors cockade and the Prussian colors cockade are present. The interior leather liner is present, although dry and worn at each side of the front visor. The end of one of the leather tongues is torn and the drawstring has been replaced. The interior of the rear visor is unit marked to the 95th (6th Thuringian) Infantry Regiment. The regiment was a part of the 38th Infantry Division, which took part in the invasion of Belgium in 1914, fought in Russia, and returned to the western front in the fall of 1915. The unit fought at Verdun, the Somme, Flanders, Ypres, Lys and Cambrai, ending the war in Belgium.
