The letter is completely handwritten in ink on the stationary of the “Office of the Admiral of the Navy”, a rank only ever held by Dewey. The letter is dated “5th Aug.” but without a year, although the letter would have been written during or after 1903, when Dewey was promoted to the rank of Admiral of the Navy. The letter shows a vertical and a horizontal fold line. The letter is signed “George Dewey” and it is legible, intact, and in very good condition.
