German 1941 Presentation Lion Head Damascus Sword
$3,250.00
The sword has an overall length in the scabbard of approximately 38 inches, with a blade length of approximately 31 inches. The blade shows a Damascus steel pattern with a gilt presentation panel on one side reading “Herrn Major Engelmann in Verehrung Zugeeignet, Weihnachten 1941” (“Dedicated to Major Engelmann in veneration, Christmas 1941”). Below this dedication is the engraved signature of the presenter of the sword. The blade shows some spots, but overall the blade is quite impressive and very clean. The wood grip is without chips or cracks and it remains tightly triple wrapped with darkly toned wire. The langet features crossed artillery barrels. There is some gilt finish remaining on the guard. ferule, knuckle bow, back strap and lion hear pommel, with spots of wear to the finish which reveal the base material, while the hilt assembly as a whole shows an uncleaned patina. The lion head carries two faceted red glass eyes. The gloss black scabbard paint has scuffs, abrasions, and spots, but it is largely intact.
