Framed WWI Imperial German 2nd Life Hussars Regimental Pennant with Note of Provenance

$1,250.00

A framed World War I pennant for the Leib-Husaren-Regiment “Königen Viktoria von Preussen” Nr.2. The pennant is a cream colored wool pennant (though originally it was no doubt white, having toned in color with use in the field and with age) with a separately sewn black wool death’s head. The hoist edge of the pennant has four mounting holes, each stitched on the edges as with buttonholes. The hoist edge of the pennant further bears a faint regimental or depot stamp. The pennant measures approximately 13 3/8 inches by 26 1/2 inches. The framed piece has an overall size of approximately 18 1/2 by 31 1/2 inches. In all respects the pennant conforms to the example that can be found shown on the website of the Imperial War Museum in England. The pennant is laid on a mat within the frame, and on the mat is written a note of provenance: “____[apparently a foreign word] pennant of the ‘Hussars de la Mort’ (Death’s Head Hussars) found in the ___ St. ___ [no doubt a town of village in France]. -Battle of the Marne- About where Foch made his famous thrust.” This statement then appears to be followed by a signature in French. The pennant itself, as can be seen, was undoubtedly carried in combat in the field. It has a number of holes and stains, but overall it remains quite impressive. The frame is rather old and shows wear, but it is complete and intact.
