Field Marshal Erwin Rommel Signed Portrait Photograph

The photograph is 5 by 7 inches in size.  The photograph depicts Field Marshal Rommel wearing the distinctive uniform that he wore as Commander of the Afrika Korps, with the Knight’s Cross and Oak Leaves at his neck, together with his Pour le Merite. The photograph is boldly signed “E Rommel Generalfeldmarschall u. Oberbefehlshaber” (“Field Marshal and Commander”, with the letter “E” characteristically flowing directly into “Rommel”, without a intervening period). It is a portrait photograph that was released by a press agency and which has attached to the reverse the typed German caption for use with the photograph in the German press:

“Frei gegeben durch Zensur:
‘Hohe Auszeichnung fur General Rommel’
Der Fuhrer und Oberste Befehlshaber der Wehrmacht hat dem General der Panzertruppe Rommel, Befehlshaber der Panzergruppe Afrika am 20.1.42.als 6 Offizier der Deutschen Wehrmacht das Eichenlaub mit Schwerten zum Ritterkreuz des Eiserne Kreuzes verliehen.

‘High Award for General Rommel’
On January 20, 1942, The Fuhrer and Supreme Commander of the Wehrmacht awarded [to] General of the Panzertruppe Rommel, commander of the Panzergruppe Afrika, the oak leaves with swords to the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross, [one of] 6 officers of the German Wehrmacht [receiving the decoration that day] “.

The photograph shows expected age toning but the photograph is in excellent condition and the signature and rank are clear and dramatic.
