Extensive Spanish-American War Group to Md Officer

This is an extensive uniform group from Colonel Joseph B. Phills of the 1st & 4th Maryland Infantry. All of the material is in fine condition, a few pieces show minor use and wear.

The group consists of;
Double breasted black wool frock coat with Maryland staff buttons, Infantry shoulder knots with bullion Lt Col. rank insignia and the number “4”. Coat also displays a gold officer’s chest cord with gold waffles. Coat is in excellent condition with matching black wool trousers.
Model 1892 Officer’s Jacket with black cloth tape quatrefoil on the front and cuffs, trim shows some wear along the front and there are a few moth holes. Pair Infantry Lieut Colonel’s shoulder straps. Blue wool trousers with 1 1/2″ white stripe on the outer leg.
Model 1895 jacket with black mohair front, hidden buttons, “U.S.V” and 1st MD Infantry Collar insignia, Infantry Majors shoulder straps. With light blue trouser exhibiting white stripe on the outer seams.
Khaki tunic with blue wool shoulder straps and collar. Complete with all original insignia including “U.S.V.” and 1st Md Infantry collar insignia, shoulder strap eagles and Major’s rank insignia. Brass eagle “I” buttons. Matching khaki trousers.
White cotton duck fatigue jacket and trousers. Jacket shows some collar wear.
Dress cape, deep blue wool with velvet collar and corded front in mint condition.
Deep blue wool jacket with mohair front, pinned on the front is an enameled 1st Division 2nd Corps Badge marked on the reverse “C.E. Vokes Maker Covington Ky”. Spanish War Veterans buttons, bullion “S.W.V.” collar insignia.
Gray wool trousers with black stripe.

Chapeau de bras with gold bullion eagle crest and eagle staff side button, original ostrich feathers, silk lined, maker embossed Ridabock & Co New York, Perfect condition and housed in its original tin case.
Model 1895 Officer’s cap with direct embroidered gold bullion eagle and eagle “I” side buttons. Hat shows minor wear at the front of the leather sweatband and along the mohair band at the back. Wool body is perfect. Embossed “New York Clothing House Baltimore Md”.
Kepi with direct embroidered gold bullion 4th Infantry insignia and Md side buttons, also made by the New York Clothing House in Baltimore. Wool body is perfect, leather sweatband is un-stitched for about 5″.
Pair leather gauntlets showing staining.
Dress sword belt, leather with gold facing. Embossed with Ridabock & Co logo. M1851 gilt eagle buckle.
Brown leather sword belt with M1851 eagle buckle, leather is soft and pliable.
Insignia, which includes a pair of Colonel Adjutant General shoulder knots in fine condition, housed in their japanned tin box stenciled “Ridabock & Co New York”. Two pairs of Staff Colonel’s shoulder straps. Two pairs of Infantry Lieutenant Colonel’s shoulder straps. One pair of Infantry Major’s shoulder straps. All in excellent condition.
Black mohair collar with direct embroidered Adjutant General and “Md” insignia. Pair Marksman collar buttons.
Gold aiguillette in mint condition.
Pair brass spurs with leather straps.
Bronze 1st Md N.G. Marksman, 4th Md N.G. 9 Year Service Medal. 1893 Dept of Md GAR Medal. Mass Ancient and Honorable Atillery Company Medal.
Small sterling faced pocket knife engraved “Col J.B. Phipps Umpire 1895”. Leather wallet, silver scissors, clothes brush and misc.
Accompanying the uniform group is a scrap book / photo album with newspaper clippings pertaining to the 1st Maryland National Guard and photographs depicting officer’s and enlisted men engaged in camp and drill activities. Many are captioned in period ink. Also included are loose photos that measure from 4 1/4″ X 6 1/2″ to 10″ X 11″, muster rolls and misc orders, all are in excellent condition. The photos depicting Col. Phipps show him wearing the uniforms and headgear included in the group.
