Cloth German Cross in Gold on Uniform Pocket with Note

$840.00

A cloth German Cross in Gold which is still sewn to the front pocket of the uniform on which it was worn. The pocket material is a high quality field gray wool blend and it looks very much like the material most frequently seen in the Waffen SS uniforms that were tailored in Italy. Interestingly, the individual who sewed the Cross on to the uniform (probably the enlisted ranks aide to an officer) was not paying the closest attention, and the Cross was actually sewn on sideways. The swastika is positioned correctly when looking at the uniform pocket straight on, but close inspection shows that the Cross was sewn with the “1941” date in the 9 O’ Clock position rather than at the 6 O’ Clock position at the bottom. The Cross is accompanied by a handwritten note from the American veteran who brought the Cross home which reads “This is a pocket off of the uniform of a German officers uniform that I got at Hielbronn [sic].” (The note no doubt was referring to the city of Heilbronn, Germany, in northern Baden-Wurttemberg.) Excellent used condition.
