1943 Dated Signed Japanese Army Officer Shin Gunto Sword

The sword has an overall length in the scabbard of approximately 39 inches, with a blade length of approximately 25-1/2 inches. The blade is generally rather bright, showing scratches and minor spots, but having a visible subtle temper line and making a very good appearance. The blade shows age, particularly towards the tip, but the blade is without chips, nicks or active rust. The tang is signed “Michihiro”and dated Showa 18th Year [1943] May”.  “Michihiro”‘s actual name was “Ishihara Shūzō”. He entered the Seki Guild Log on Showa 16 [1941] on April 13. The grip is wrapped in the traditional fashion in brown fabric. The standard military menuki are beneath the wrapping on each side of the grip. The gilt tsuba guard is the solid style with relief cherry blossoms. The painted metal scabbard shows scuffs and spots consistent with use in the combat theater, but it is complete. Overall the sword is in very good condition.
