1916 U-Boat “Deutschland” Souvenir Iron Cross Medal

$150.00

Approximately 2-3/4 inches by 2-3/4 inches. The medal is formed of iron with a central brass medallion on each side. In 1916 the German cargo submarine “Deutschland” arrived in the harbor of Baltimore to take on supplies and materiel after off loading its ballast of iron. That iron was then used to create the souvenir Iron Cross which commemorated the voyage of the Deutschland. The central brass medallions bear the image of the U-boat’s Captain, Kapitan Paul Koenig, while the opposite side bears a medallion with an image of the U-boat itself. The Iron Cross shows signs of age, with verdigris, surface rust, and patina, but overall it is in good condition.
