SA Gruppe Sachsen / NSKK Coffee Can Kepi

A really fascinating piece of Third Reich headgear: an SA “coffee can” kepi (which is even marked in the crown “SA Service Cap”) with an emerald green wool top and aluminum front button, identifying this as a kepi worn by a member of SA Gruppe Sachsen. However, the original owner apparently entered the service of the NSKK and, rather than spend more money for yet another kepi, he covered the emerald green wool top with a black wool band and stitched a silver wire NSKK eagle to the front of the kepi. Thus, his SA service kepi became his NSKK service kepi. The exterior of the kepi shows signs of use but it remains very clean with no mothing or damage to the green wool. The leather chin strap shows typical age. The interior of the kepi is exceptionally well marked, with a retailer’s stamp on the interior side next to a large cloth RZM label. As noted, the interior crown is stamped “SA Dienst Mutze”. An impressive piece of headgear.
