Small Near Mint Third Reich Navy Jack

The flag is a wool blend material with printed white circle and black swastika. The flag has reinforced corners and fly end. The hoist edge is manufacturer marked by a Dutch flag company. The hoist edge is also marked “G.FL. 50 X 85”. This abbreviation indicates that the flag was a “Gosch Flagge”, or Navy Jack (The ‘Jack’ flag was flown from a jackstaff on the bow of a war ship to indicate its nationality). A flag of the size of 50 by 85 centimeters (about 18 1/2 by 34 1/2 inches) was designated under Kriegsmarine regulations for ships of 500 tons or less. This would have included the fast attack boats known by the allies as “E Boats”, and which carried the German designation of “Schnellboot”, a fast attack boat referred to as an “S Boat”. The flag is in near mint, unissued condition, with one small and very narrow hole, about 1/2 inch long, in the red field.
