Imperial Bavarian Model 1892 Artillery Lion Head Short Sword by Alexander Coppel

The sword has an overall length in the scabbard of approximately 25 inches, with a blade length of approximately 18 1/4 inches. The sword actually reflects the German talent for economical use of resources, since the blade of the sword is that of a Model 1869 Werder bayonet that was re-fitted with a cast lion head hilt. Both the blade and the hilt carry multiple proof marks. The spine of the blade carries a mark of a crown over what appears to be a Gothic letter “G”. The underside of the sword guard and the top of the scabbard throat both bear a prof mark of a crown over what appears to be a Gothic “R”. The ricasso of the blade bears the scales and the “A.C.” trademark of the Alexander Coppel firm. The sword has a number of gray spots and areas, but it is without chips, nicks, or active rust. The leather scabbard shows wear and age but it remains pliable and it is complete and intact. The brass base of the scabbard has a number of small dents.  The scabbard throat is unit marked “9.A.3.37.” above a “B”, indicating that the sword was carried by a member of the 9th Royal Bavarian Artillery Regiment, Battery 3, with this sword being the 37th weapon. Overall very good condition.
