Signed WWII Japanese Army Officer Shin Gunto Sword

A fine example of a World War II period Japanese Imperial Army officer’s sword, signed by the swordsmith who created the sword. The blade is approximately 25 inches long, with the sword having an overall length of approximately 39 1/2 inches when within the scabbard. The wooden handle is covered in ray skin and wrapped with green/brown fabric in the traditional fashion. The standard military menuki of three cherry blossoms is beneath the wrap. The sword has a brown painted scabbard with the original paint approximately 95% intact. The gilt tsuba is is the solid style with cherry blossoms in relief. The blade is quite bright and clean with a distinctive and visible wavy temper line. There are a few minor spots, the blade is without chips or nicks. Overall the blade is in excellent condition. The tang of the sword is signed on one side: “This was made by Takai Sadatsugu, Residing in Seki, Gifu prefecture”. Takai Sadatsugu’s civilian name was Takai Sadajiro, who was born on 24 May 1902. He worked as a gunto smith and died on 20 May 1968.
