Signed WWII Japanese Army Officer Shin Gunto Sword

A very fine example of a World War II Japanese Army officer’s shin gunto sword. The blade is approximately 24 1/2 inches long, with an overall length of approximately 39 inches when within the scabbard. The wooden handle is covered in golden brown colored ray skin and wrapped with a darker brown fabric in the traditional fashion. The traditional military cherry blossom menuki is beneath the wrap. There is a decorated brass tsuba with cherry blossom motif. The blade is bright steel with a visible wavy temper line, and there are no cracks, chips, nicks, or active rust. Overall the blade is quite bright and in fine condition. The tang beneath the handle is signed “Hattori Masahiro saku”, or “Made by Hattori Masahiro”. During the war Hattori Masahiro was a sword smith of the Gifu prefecture and a designated Imperial Army sword smith. His civilian name was Hattori Kazushi. The scabbard has exterior olive brown paint that is approximately 100% intact. Overall the sword is in excellent condition and very impressive.
