The sword has an overall length in the scabbard of approximately 38 inches, with a blade length of approximately 26 inches. The blade is extensively mottled with mossy areas as well as surface abrasions on one side, but it is without nicks, chips, or active rust. The blade is numbered “59342”, positioned to be read with the cutting edge of the blade facing down, indicating production by the Tokyo Arsenal. A different number appears on the scabbard throat, that being “90833”. The tsuba guard is a pebbled pierced example. The copper fuchi collar at the base of the grip bears the marks of the Iijima Sword Company as well as the inspection marks of the Tokyo and Kokura Arsenals. The painted metal grip exhibits age and wear with a loss of most of the exterior paint. The metal scabbard shows wear to the painted finish from use in the field, with surface grime, surface rust and abrasions, but the scabbard is intact.
