Korean War Posthumous Purple Heart of a Black Combat Soldier of the 2nd Infantry Division

The medal is on a slot brooch suspension, with the suspension plate and the medal finish showing spots and verdigris, but with the medal being in overall excellent condition. The medal is officially engraved “Richard C. McCowan”. The medal is accompanied by research which states that McCowan was missing in action and presumed killed in action on February 12, 1951 in Korea. McCowan, who was African-American, was a combat infantryman in Company “K” of the 3rd Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division.
