17th Century Japanese Wakizashi Signed “Mutsu No Kami Daido”

$775.00

The wakizashi has an overall length in the scabbard of approximately 29 inches, with a blade length of approximately 21-1/2 inches. The blade is generally bright, with a subtle but visible and distinct temper line. The blade exhibits surface grime and some cloudiness, with pinprick oxidation and with a small but visible “fukure”, where a pocket of air or carbon developed during the forging process and ruptured, leaving what looks like a small textured spot in the surface of the blade. The tang of the blade is signed “Mutsu No Kami Daido”, a name that was used by several smiths between 1573 and 1684, dating the wakizashi from the mid 16th century to the later 17th century. The collar of the blade is etched with a “falling rain” design, while the guard bears gilt leaf decorations on both sides. The grip is wrapped in the traditional fashion with black fabric, beneath which are figural menuki on each side. The ferrule and the pommel cap both have a matching mock weave pattern. The scabbard is black lacquered wood. A fine old signed piece in overall very good condition.
