In addition to the painted annotation of “Souvenier Bois de Belleau 1914-1918” on the exterior rim, the exterior of the helmet bears a design of what appears to be a plant with three stems holding three hearts; a heart; a Cross of Lorraine; and a Christian cross. The exterior has a dark patina and typical surface rust. The interior liner is present, while the chin strap is missing.
