1943 Dated Kōa Isshin Manchurian Steel Army Officer Shin Gunto Sword
$2,175.00
The sword has an overall length in the scabbard of approximately 38 inches with a blade length of approximately 26 inches. The blade is generally bright, though it is coated on both sides by a film of old, dried oil. The blade has scattered dark spots, including several on the cutting edge. The tang is signed with the motto Kōa Isshin Mantetsu-saku (“Asia, One Mind”), reflecting the production of the sword from Manchurian steel. The opposite side of the tang is dated using the Japanese zodiac system: “Showa Water-Sheep [year], Spring [1943]”. The brass tsuba is the solid style with cherry blossoms in relief and showing an uncleaned patina. The grip is covered in light ray skin, with a wrap in the traditional fashion in golden brown tape. Beneath the wrap on each side are the standard military menuki with three cherry blossoms. The scabbard retains a coat of thick original olive green paint which shows significant wear, rippling of the paint, some rust, and verdigris.
