WWII Era Japanese Presentation Suzuri Slate Ink Box
Japanese ink box, or “suzuri”, of carved black slate, within which writing ink is mixed. Approximately 7 inches by 5 inches by 1 1/4 inches. The wooden cover lifts off to reveal a reservoir in which water is placed and an ink stick is rubbed back and forth to create the desired consistency of ink. The top of the suzuri depicts a relief combat helmet and Shin gunto sword. The bottom of the piece presents an inscription that identifies the suzuri as having been presented as a gift by the Azumi branch of the Japanese Imperial Legion Association. Very good used condition.
