WWI Self Inflicted Wound Armband
Approximately 16 -1/2 inches long and 3-1/2 inches wide. Constructed of yellow wool (yellow being the color of cowardice) with separately sewn black wool letters and cotton backing. Two integral tabs at one end of the armband were threaded into adjustable buckles for wear, with these buckles no longer present. American soldiers who were convicted by court martial of having given themselves a self inflicted wound to avoid combat were given sentences, often of confinement and punishment duty, and which included the requirement that they wear the “SIW” armband. Overall very good condition.
