Named WWI German Prisoner of War Camp Guard Detachment Stein


The one liter stoneware stein is approximately 9 1/2 inches tall in overall height and without chips or cracks to the body of the stein. The lid is engraved “M. Klein”. The front of the stein bears a color rendering of two prisoners of war raising Bavarian blue and white banners under the gaze of a German solider with a rifle slung under his arm. The stein bears the designation¬† “Bew. Komp. I.B. 40” for “Bewachung [Guard] Company {of] Infantry Battalion 40”. The stein also carries the designation of “Kriegs-Gefangenen-Lager Puchheim”, indicating the Prisoner of War Camp at Puchheim, Germany. This was a camp under the authority of the First Royal Bavarian Army Corps in Munich. The camp was located on a military airfield 8 miles from Munich and it held 12,000 enlisted ranks prisoners of war.
