Named Vietnam War Helicopter Gunship Pilot Medals, Documents, and Photographs Group

The group is comprised of the medals, documents, and photographs of Chief Warrant Officer Robert W. Watts, who served in Vietnam in 1967 and 1968 as the pilot of a Huey Helicopter gunship of the 48th Assault Helicopter Company, and who was decorated with medals which included the Distinguished Flying Cross for a specific act of combat valor. The group includes the the medals and decorations awarded to Chief warrant Officer Watts, to include the Distinguished Flying Cross, unnamed as awarded, on a slot brooch suspension; the Bronze Star Medal, privately named “67-68 Robert W. Watts”, on a slot brooch suspension; the Air Medal, privately named “Robert W. Watts 67-68”, with two silver and two bronze oak leaf clusters that reflect 22 awards of the medal, on a slot brooch suspension marked “HLP-GI”; the Purple Heart, unnamed as awarded, with an oak leaf cluster on the ribbon, and on a slot brooch suspension; the Army Commendation Medal, unnamed, crimp brooch suspension that bears a maker mark and the “GI” designation; the U.S. Army Good Conduct Medal, unnamed, on a slot brooch suspension; the National Defense Medal, crimp brooch suspension that bears a maker mark and the “GI” designation; the Vietnam Service Medal with two campaign stars, crimp brooch suspension; and the Vietnam War Campaign Medal of the Republic of Vietnam . The group also includes a thick binder containing original and copies of documents relating to Watts’ training, combat service, and awards and decorations. The include the original award document for the first through twenty second oak leaf clusters for the air medal, as well as copies of the original citations for the Distinguished Flying Cross, awarded for an act of valor in combat, and the awards of the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. also within the group are several 8 inch by 10 inch photographs of Watts, including one in which he wears his Class “A” uniform with the ribbons for the medals in the group, as well as the insignia which is in the group. The insignia includes a Warrant Officer visor cap insignia; a pair of pin back Warrant Officer and “U.S.” lapel insignia; a pair of Warrant Officer shoulder rank insignia on the card; and a full size Army Aviator pilot wing, pin back, and maker marked by Vanguard. Overall the items in the group are in excellent condition.
