Long WWII Era Japanese Scroll of Royal Decrees
Paper scroll on two wooden rollers, with a suspension tie at the top. Approximately 5 feet long. There are horizontal creases in the paper scroll which could perhaps be pressed out, or which would certainly flatten when the scroll is hung as was originally intended. Good condition.
The scroll depicts Emperor Meiji, and three royal proclamations that were considered of great importance to Japanese soldiers. These proclamations, or “Rescripts”, consist of the 1904 declaration of war against Russia; the Imperial Rescript on the Restoration of Peace [following the Russo-Japanese War] (Meiji 38, 16 October, 1905); and Imperial Rescript to Soldiers and Sailors (Meiji 38, October 1905).
